Beloved mother of the late Pauline Thompson (1987) (late Elmer), Barbara Gabourie (Joe), Jean Holbert-Leighton (late Jim) and Kathy Hillis.  Survived by brother Ray Spencer (Edwina) of Calgary.  Predeceased by siblings Frank Spencer (late Merle) and Don Spencer (late Marion).  Grandmother of  Barry Thompson (Laura), Beverley Hill, Karen Turner (Bert), Aaron Gabourie (Brandy), Lauren Leighton (Curran) and the late Peter Thompson (1988).  Great grandmother  to 12 and great great grandmother to many.
Mom was blessed with wonderful health throughout her life and enjoyed life to the fullest.  She loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips across
Canada and the USA with Gerald and Dad. Mom, Pauline and  friends travelled to the USA and especially enjoyed attending the Kentucky Derby.  In 1986, she travelled to Europe with Barbara visiting England, France, Germany, Switzerland etc. enjoying all the unique foods and shopping in every country.  Mom and Jean enjoyed their many travels through the Prairies to BC and on two separate occasions to the East coast enjoying lobster dinners and visiting Peggy’s Cove.  Another time, Mom, Jean & friend Wanda took the famous Polar Bear Express north and she was coaxed into travelling in a war canoe across James Bay. As Mom was deathly afraid of water, this was quite an experience. Barbara and Jean travelled with Mom and Gerald to California to visit Kathy and at a later date, she celebrated her 90th birthday visiting Kathy in Texas. In later years, Mom & Gerald enjoyed their many trips to Florida with their good friends Tiny and Muriel Rivers.  Mom was very active in her church groups and had a beautiful voice, singing at many weddings and funerals throughout the years. She was a long standing member of the Women’s Institute and enjoyed the many friendships she made. She truly enjoyed her sweet treats and made wonderful desserts and would sooner have desserts than regular meals. We will miss you Mom. Rest in peace.  We would like to thank the staff of Moira Place for their wonderful care and compassion.  In consideration of the COVID-19 environment,  a graveside service will be held in Thomasburg Cemetery on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.  Arrangements:  McConnell Funeral Home, Tweed.  If desired donations may be made to Moira Place LTC or St. John’s United Church, Tweed.

Jacqueline Susan Smothers
April 12th 1954 - November 21st 2020
In sadness, we announce the passing of Jacqueline "Jackie" Susan Smothers (Nee Gratton) of
Tweed, Ontario. Jackie passed peacefully in her home on Saturday November 21st surrounded with love, after a courageously fought battle with cancer.  Jackie is survived by the love of her life, Dennis Chapin, her beloved life partner of the last 34 years. She will be missed deeply by her loving children. Jackie's daughter Amy (Jeremy), and her son Tim and Grandchildren, will carry on holding memories close and living some of the lessons of love, strength and forgiveness she taught through example. Jackie was the beloved daughter of Lois and the late John Gratton (2004). Sometimes referred to lovingly as "the Princess", she was a dear sister and friend, sharing a special bond with each of her brothers and sisters. Jackie is survived by her siblings Gail, Pat(Al), John (Brenda), Jim, Jo-Anne (Les) and Jenny (Keith). Jackie will also be missed by many nieces and nephews, many friends, and so many more considered extended family.  Jackie (sometimes called Jake) was born in Brantford April 12th 1954. The number 54 followed her as a lucky sign through out her life. The Gratton family moved to Waterford a couple of years after Jackie was born, where she grew up and attended Waterford District High School. Jackie loved love and adventure and was blessed with lots of both during her lifetime. She has done everything from hitchhiking across the border, throwing Birthday parties for rock stars, starting and running a daycare, to retiring with her green thumbs to a hobby farm in the country where she canned from their extensive garden. Her favorite things in this world were her family, her friends and music. The only thing better than those things was a combination of them...and Toast Time. She loved to watch the sunset in exotic places and at home on her back porch with her furry friends. She loved palm trees, chocolate, lipstick, the colour red and to laugh. After being a vegetarian for most of her life, in the last months she discovered a love for hamburgers and bacon ketchup sandwiches.  She will be missed, but remembered by these things and so much more.  Forever in our hearts Cremation has already taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when we can gather safely.  In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice would be much appreciated.  Arrangements entrusted to the McConnell Funeral Home, Tweed.

LYNCH:  Anna Marie (née Rush)
January 16, 1927 – October 21, 2020
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anna Marie Lynch of natural causes on October 21, 2020 at Markham Stouffville Hospital, in Markham Ontario.  The world has lost a wizard of a woman, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and aunt.  Born in Stoco, Ontario, Anna enjoyed an accomplished career as a teacher (as did Helen and Doris, her two soul-mate sisters). In addition to her pedagogical acumen and ability to inspire young people with hearing challenges at the Ontario School for the Deaf in Belleville, Anna was completely devoted to her profession and her students.
One small example of this devotion played out in October 1954.   Anna had left Bellevillle with a friend and colleague for a weekend getaway in Toronto.   When they came to catch their train back to Belleviille, they encountered a completely deserted Union Station, only to learn that Hurricane Hazel (Canada’s largest National Disaster) had descended on the region.   All passenger trains had been cancelled and the police had closed the highways in and out of the city.
This was an issue because Anna and her colleague had to teach Sunday School the next morning.  Desperate to find a solution, they spied a young man in a CPR uniform whom they knew from Belleville.   They begged for help, and eventually learned that a freight train was about to leave for Belleville.  Using her intrepid powers of persuasion, the “ever elegant” Anna and her friend negotiated passage and hopped onto the caboose of the freight train (probably wearing high heels).  It was a long “stop and go” journey but they managed to arrive in Belleville by daybreak, in time to teach their Sunday School classes.
Anna Rush met Carl Lynch by chance when she drove her parents from Stoco to a chicken supper at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Marmora.  Carl was a newly minted Queen’s University graduate who had just scored a job at the local Marmora mine.  It turned out that Anna’s mother knew Carl’s aunt, who was also there … and the rest is history.  The couple married in Stoco, in September 1956.
Anna and Carl began their life together in Marmora, before moving to Kingston when Carl got a job as a metallurgical engineer with the Aluminum Company of Canada (ALCAN).  Several years and three children later, they packed up their brand new 1961 Ford Fairlane and moved to Montréal, where Carl had been promoted to ALCAN’s head office.
Living in Pointe Claire, Québec, Anna became well known for her culinary skills (a great generational talent) and as a hostess extraordinaire.  In addition to nurturing her five children, she welcomed many guests including numerous neighbours, nieces and nephews into her home.
Upon Carl’s retirement in 1987, they left the West Island, and moved to Picton, Ontario where they had a lovely home overlooking the Long Reach area of the Bay of Quinte.  It was during this time that Anna was able to achieve her lifelong dream of graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University, which she was awarded in 1991.
Eventually, the couple moved to Toronto and then to Markham to be closer to their family.
A legendary “clean freak”, a “warrior worrier” (in the best Irish-Catholic way), and an accomplished watercolour painter, who specialized in portraying perfect little children (totally unlike her own brood of five kids), Anna is survived by her two sisters: Helen Dillon and Doris Stuart, and her five living children: Karen, Nancy, Sheila (Eric LeSausse), David (Arden Warling), and Colleen (Pat Langner).  Affectionately known as both “Granna” and “Da” depending on the person, Anna will be very much missed by her seven grandchildren:  Aidan and John LeSausse, Kelvin and Kayla Langner, and Sean, Ryan and Colin Lynch.
Anna is predeceased by her husband Carl, their 17-month old son Charlie, and her parents Henigan and Margaret (Laffan) Rush.
The Lynch family would like to thank the caring staff on the second floor at Amica Swan Lake, and the team at Markham Stouffville Hospital who guided Anna through her final days.
In consideration of the COVID-19 environment, a private funeral service will be held for the family, in Marmora, Ontario.  Arrangements: McConnell Funeral Home, Marmora  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada or to a local Food Bank.
Anna’s grace, resilience, style, and sense of humour, will always be with us!
